History

In 1994 Smyrna Assembly began work and ministry in Wherry Housing Cooperative. The cooperative had many abandoned buildings and all the characteristics of a neighborhood with no hope. The church remodeled one apartment and helped three homeless families to get a new start on life. The real mission was not only to help those in need, but to show the love of God to the entire community.
Since that small beginning, other churches began to work with us. Together, we remodeled units, loaded demolished buildings into dumpsters, painted, and generally shared the love of Jesus to people of all ages in the community. Youth, college, adults and family groups continue to come all through the year to touch this neighborhood for Christ. In 2003, Community Servants, Inc. was formed as a non-profit ministry.
Two dormitories with kitchens that house 102 people have been built. A dining hall with a commercial kitchen is also available for visiting groups.
As of December 2009, over 13,750 people with 300 churches and groups have participated in this ministry. In 2009 more than 750 people (includes local volunteers) with 12 groups came to Wherry. The following numbers indicate some of the work accomplished through people who have a servant heart:
95 Painted Buildings 9 units remodeled for dorms
60 apartments remodeled 1 unit for clothes distribution
20 buildings demolished/removed 2 units for furniture distribution
42 buildings roofed 1 unit for garage
3 buildings under construction 4 units warehouse

The list goes on with painting, concreting sidewalks, yard work, hauling trash, etc...
All this work, done by Christian volunteers, has given us credibility and an open door in this community to share Christ.
One on one has been the strength of our outreach. As one Atheist said after three years of witnessing groups coming into his neighborhood at Wherry, "I CAN'T RESIST THE LOVE ANYMORE, I WANT TO ACCEPT CHRIST."
